THE GREAT GARLIC BULB CONTEST
"It's A Giant One!"

The Great Garlic Bulb Contest is for garlic growers. The garlic bulb has to be grown by the garlic grower entering it. The top three winning entries will be based on diameter, weight, and overall appearance. Overall Appearance is determined by the following criteria:

A. Mold, mildew, pest, or disease (do not want these present)
B. Heaviness and firmness of bulb (do not want a lot of dehydration)
C. Tightness of wrappers (means cured and stored properly)
D. Number of wrappers after cleaning (the more wrappers left on the longer the shelf life)
E. Clean wrappers (stained wrappers mean too much wetness during harvest)
F. Cloves intact around the stem (not intact means over-mature and susceptible to poor hygiene and shorter shelf life)
G. Stem and root trimmed neatly (promotes good hygiene and shelf life)

The point system has been improved for grading heavier/wider bulbs.
Please note: Elephant garlic may not be entered in the contest.

Bring your entry to the 5th Annual Cuba Garlic Festival Stinking Rose Food Tent on Saturday, September 19th, 2009 by 1:30 pm. Please include a 3" x 5" index card with business name, your name, address, and phone number on one side of the card and the variety of garlic entered (if known) on the other side. Leave your card and bulb together at the judging table with your card turned over (so judges don’t see your name). They will only see the variety listed. Put your bulb on top of the card. If possible, please be present during the contest so winners can have their pictures taken for the web site and newspapers after they are announced.

GARLIC HOT DOG EATING CONTEST
"How Many Dogs Can You Down?"

The Garlic Hot Dog Eating Contest will be held at the Cuba Garlic Festival on Saturday, September 19th at 5:00 pm at the Stinking Rose Food Tent. The contest is open to 8-12 grade students, and is limited to 10 students on a first come, first serve basis. The contest is sponsored by the Cuba Chamber of Commerce and Cuba Giant Food Mart and will be hosted by the CRCS Spanish Club.

Hebrew National brand hot dogs will be used in the contest because they include garlic in the ingredients. They will be grilled and served on plain hot dog buns. Mustard and ketchup may be used as condiments, if desired. The contest will use Picnic Style Rules. According to www.competitiveeaters.com Picnic Style Rules are “rules that acknowledge the tradition, culture and heritage of a particular food item. Simply put, Picnic Style Rules are rules of a contest that do not allow for the mutilation, desecration, or improper destruction of a food item.” This means the hot dog and roll must be eaten together, one at a time. This will “increase the entertainment value of the contest and eliminate the tricky business connected to the massacre of food.” Each contestant will be allowed a small cup of water for sipping between bites, but the hot dog and/or bun May Not Be Dipped In Water to help break it down!

Each contestant will have an assigned judge to count the number of hot dogs with rolls eaten. The contestant who eats the most hot dogs with rolls in 10 MINUTES using Picnic Style Rules will be the champion.

Deadline to enter is September 10th. Entry forms are available at the school and should be turned in at the reception desk.
