In March 2008, the Cuba NY Chamber of Commerce set out to raise funds for the erection of a 150' flagpole on Cuba's Main Street. Community Bank, N.A. generously offered the park next to their building to be the flagpole's home. Standing at 150', this would be one of the tallest free-standing flagpoles in the United States. In order to raise funds for the project, the Chamber made sponsorships of engraved pavers and granite blocks available that would be installed in the park around the base of the pole. Through the generous donations of many individuals and organizations, along with additional Chamber fund-raisers like the Flag Day Celebration and Starry Night at Empire City Farms, the project was ready to move forward in 2009. |
![]() ![]() The flagpole arrived in Cuba on August 12, 2009, and was assembled along the Main Street sidewalk. The following day, excited Cuba residents gathered downtown to watch the pole's installation. As a crane slowly lifted the pole to a vertical position, its base was pushed along the sidewalk. It was then moved to its base were is was lowered 15' into the ground and stood on its own for the first time. ![]() ![]() A formal dedication ceremony was held on September 11, 2009. A giant 20' x 38' United States flag, which had been flown over the U.S. Capital building flew at half-mast in memory of those lost on September 11, 2001. Local residents and representatives spoke as the "Liberty Pole" was dedicated to the many community voluteers and members of the armed forces who have contributed to the continued service of Cuba and our country. This project would not have been possible without the vision and dedication of Michael Doyle, and the support of Community Bank, N.A., Ungermann Excavating, the Cuba Garlic Festival Committee, and the many individuals and organizations who have made this project a reality. |
